Live in Elizabeth and need an auto electrician? The town was built around manufacturing, and Holden built cars on Philip Highway until 2017, so older Commodores, utes and trailers are still a big part of the work here.

Common auto electrical jobs in Elizabeth

Elizabeth, the centre of the City of Playford, has a strong car culture from its manufacturing days, and many locals keep older cars running and tow on weekends.

Keeping older Commodores running

The last car rolled off the line at the Holden Elizabeth plant on 20 October 2017, but plenty of locally built Commodores and utes are still on Elizabeth's streets. As they age, common faults include failing alternators, worn starter motors, tired earth straps and body control module problems that affect locks and lights. Parts for these cars are widely available, and repairs are usually well worth doing. Our guide on how to know if your alternator needs replacing explains the warning signs.

Central locking and windows

Older family sedans and wagons often develop central locking and window faults as door lock actuators and window motors wear. A broken wire inside the rubber boot between the door and body is a common cause and is easy to miss. Before replacing expensive modules, have the simple things checked. Our guide on why an electric window stopped working walks through the likely faults.

Weekend towing

Main North Road heads straight from Elizabeth towards Gawler and the country beyond, and plenty of locals tow camper trailers, boats and box trailers on weekends. Faulty trailer lights are the most common towing problem, followed by caravans whose batteries don't charge on the move. If your tow vehicle doesn't have a proper towbar wiring harness, it's worth fitting one. See do I need a towbar wiring harness.

Light bars and driving lights

LED light bars and driving lights are popular on utes and 4WDs in Elizabeth, especially for trips to the country where kangaroos are a real risk at night. A proper install uses a relay, a fuse near the battery, cable of the right size and a switch that turns the lights off with the high beam. Poorly wired lights are a common cause of melted switches and flat batteries.

Warning lights on older cars

When an engine, ABS or airbag light comes on in an older car, the cause can be a cheap sensor or a corroded plug rather than a major failure. Reading the fault code is the first step and saves guessing. Airbag faults should always be handled by a professional, as the system can be dangerous to work on. Our guide on what to do when a dashboard warning light comes on explains which lights need urgent attention.

Elizabeth auto electrical questions

Is it worth fixing the electrics on an older Commodore?

Usually, yes. These cars were built in large numbers, so replacement alternators, starter motors, switches and sensors are easy to find and often affordable. Many faults come down to a single worn part or a corroded connection. Get a diagnosis and a quote first, and compare it with what the car is worth to you.

Why do my trailer lights work on one car but not another?

The two cars may have different plug types, or one car's towbar wiring may have a fault. Many modern cars need a dedicated wiring harness or module to run trailer lights properly. Check that the plugs match, that the trailer earth is good and that the car's trailer fuse hasn't blown.

Do I need a relay for my LED light bar?

Yes. A relay lets the dash switch control the light bar with a small current, while the heavy current flows through short, thick cable straight from the battery. Without one, the switch and the car's own wiring carry the full load, which can overheat. A fuse close to the battery protects the new circuit.

Local tip for Elizabeth

Elizabeth gets hot in summer, and older cars without modern cooling systems feel it most. If you drive an older Commodore or Falcon, have the radiator fan, its relay and the battery checked before December. A cheap relay is much easier to replace in the driveway than a cooked engine is to fix on the side of Main North Road.
