Adelaide's west runs from the beachfront at Glenelg back through Richmond, near the airport, and up to the family streets of Kidman Park. Auto electrical work here ranges from salt corrosion and boat trailers on the coast to work vans and everyday family cars inland.

Suburbs in Western Beaches

The western suburbs change with distance from the sea. Glenelg is a busy beachside suburb with the tram, Jetty Road's shops, apartments and the marina, so cars there battle salt air, sand and short trips. A few kilometres inland, Richmond sits close to Adelaide Airport and mixes older homes with workshops and light industry along its main roads. Kidman Park, further north, is mostly established family housing a short drive from the coast. That spread means corrosion and boat trailers on the coast, work vehicles in Richmond and household cars and towing in Kidman Park.

Common auto electrical jobs in Western Beaches

These are the jobs that come up most across the western suburbs, from the beachfront to the streets near the airport.

Salt air and corrosion

Cars parked near the beach are coated in fine salt spray whenever the sea breeze blows, and it settles on battery terminals, earth straps and exposed connectors. Corrosion adds resistance, which causes slow starting, dim lights and faults that come and go. A wash under the bonnet is not a good idea, but cleaning the terminals and protecting connections with grease or spray every few months helps a lot. See how to clean corroded battery terminals.

Boat and box trailers

Plenty of western suburbs households own a boat trailer, a box trailer or both. Trailer lights that are dunked in seawater or left out in the weather corrode fast, and a bad earth at the coupling causes most strange lighting faults. Sealed LED lights and a fresh plug fix most problems. Our guide why aren't my trailer lights working goes through the checks step by step.

Air conditioning in summer

Hot Adelaide summers and stop-start traffic on Anzac Highway put a heavy load on car air conditioning. When the system blows warm, the cause is often electrical: a failed condenser fan, a blown fuse or a faulty relay. Those checks are quick and worth doing first. Regassing and any other refrigerant work needs a licensed technician, so leave that part to them.
