Live or work in the Adelaide CBD and need an auto electrician? Most cars here spend their days in basement car parks and their trips crossing the grid between the terraces, so flat batteries, camera fit-outs and tricky access top the list.

Common auto electrical jobs in Adelaide

In the CBD the cars don't do many kilometres, but they do a lot of starting, parking and sitting, and that shapes the work.

Dead in the basement

A car that won't start three levels down in an apartment car park is one of the most common city calls. A jump start gets you going, but it doesn't answer why the battery went flat. Weak batteries, short trips and something drawing power while parked are the usual reasons. A mobile auto electrician can test the battery and charging system on the spot. Check your building's height limit before booking, as some service vans won't fit under low basement ceilings.

Finding a parasitic drain

If the battery keeps going flat after a few days parked, something is staying awake. Common culprits are an aftermarket alarm, a dashcam without a cut-out, a glovebox or boot light that stays on, or a module that won't go to sleep. Finding it means measuring current draw with the car locked and pulling fuses one at a time. Our guide on how to use a multimeter on a car explains the basics.

Dashcams for city streets

Between trams on King William Street, buses, cyclists and taxis pulling in on Hindley Street, a lot happens around a city car. A front and rear dashcam gives you a record if something goes wrong. Wire it to a fused circuit, run the cable neatly behind the trim, and keep it clear of curtain airbags along the pillars. If you want parking mode, fit a hardwire kit with a voltage cut-out so the camera switches off before the battery gets too low.

Courier and trade vans

Couriers and tradies work all over the CBD, stopping constantly with hazard lights flashing and doors opening and closing. That wears out door switches, tail light globes and sliding door wiring faster than normal driving. Hazard lights left on for long drops also put a steady load on the battery. Swapping incandescent globes for good LED replacements cuts the draw and lasts longer. Check that fast-flashing indicators aren't the result of fitting LEDs without the right load resistor.

Key fobs and central locking

Cars that rarely leave the city often have central locking and key fob problems, partly because the fob battery is the only thing doing much work. If the remote stops working, try a new fob battery first. If it still won't lock, the fault may be a worn door lock actuator or a broken wire where the loom passes into the door. Reprogramming lost keys usually needs the right equipment, so get a quote before you go to the dealer.

Adelaide auto electrical questions

Can a mobile auto electrician come to my apartment car park?

Usually, yes, but check a few things first. Find out the clearance height of your car park entrance, whether visitors can get in, and where the van can park while the work is done. Many jobs, like battery testing and replacement, only need a small toolkit and can be done at your bay. Larger jobs may need the car moved to street level or a workshop.

My car only does short city trips. Do I need a bigger battery?

Not usually. A bigger battery still won't be recharged properly by short trips. What helps is a longer drive once a week, or a smart battery maintainer if you have power near your bay. It also pays to switch off accessories before parking and to have the battery tested once it's a few years old, as weak batteries tend to fail in the first cold snap.

Local tip for Adelaide

Adelaide's winters are cool rather than freezing, but the first cold mornings of the year are when tired batteries give up. If your car sits in a basement during the week and only runs short trips, have the battery tested in autumn. Any time you plan a drive out of the city on a weekend, let it run on the open road to top up the charge.
